An introduction to Barbara Hepworth
Barbara Hepworth moved to Cornwall in 1939 and settled in St Ives for the rest of her life. She bought Trewyn Studio in 1949 where she carved her wood and marble sculptures.
She played a huge part in the success of St Ives as an artist’s community in the 20th century and her work went from strength to strength over the years.
By the 1960’s Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures were being shown all over the world and she was recognised as being one of the leading female artists of her time.
Her inspiration came from her surroundings and she was inspired by the breath-taking landscape in Cornwall.
“I love St Ives so deeply… many years I’ve lived here and it’s not only been my physical home but it’s also been my spiritual home… it’ll be an inspiration every day that I wake up and go to work.”
Barbara Hepworth, 1968
